Israel to Ishmael
Ishmael was Abraham's attempt to fulfil God’s promise using human ways and means. Isaac was the child of promise.
God opened up the way for Jewish people to return to the land of Israel. He promised that when that happened, he would provide their protection. He also promised that he would give them a new heart.For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws (Ez 36:24,26,27).
There is no doubt the return to the land is a fulfilmet of God's promise, but rather than becoming the people of God, Modern Israel has become a secular socialist state. Instead of depending on God for protection, Israel depends on nuclear weapons and military force. Israel is in danger of becoming an Ishmael.

Good point Ron. Surely Israel is behaving in the flesh, and not according to promise. Though the orthodox Jews would vehemently deny that. I do believe God is at work, to be sure, in Israel, and really in all nations. But perhaps, in some sort of unique way with Israel.
However I reject the pop theology dominant on Israel. And I believe that "Israel" today consists of all Jews and Gentiles who put their faith in Christ.
