Throwing Pebbles at Satan

On the last day of the Haj, pilgrims at Mecca go to the Jamarat bridge and throw pebbles at three column representing Satan. He came to lie, steal and destroy. Throwing pebbles at Satan apparently does not work, as 345 pilgrims were destroyed in a stampede.

The reason is that the source of Satan's power is human sin and disobedience. Throwing pebbles does not remove sin. Jesus dealt with Satan effectively by dying on the cross to break the power of sin. By resolving the root problem, Jesus totally destroyed Satan's power.

Unfortunately, most Christians are also just throwing pebbles at Satan. They pray that good will overcome evil, but deep in their hearts, the are convinced that Satan has not yet been defeated. They believe that Jesus will only bind Satan when he returns at the end of the age. This idea is great for Satan, but it is a denial of the cross. He only has as much power on earth as Christians allow him to have.

Christians should stop throwing pebbles at Satan and rediscover the rock of Jesus victory. It is finished.
