Lost Home

Following serious earthquakes in September, February and June, Christchuch has been divided into three zones, green, orange and red. The government has decided that houses in the red zone cannot be rebuilt or repaired, because the land is too badly damaged. They have decided to buy all houses in the red zone for the Capital Value, a valuation that is assessed every third year for calculating local authority rates (property taxes paid to city and county councils).

Although the concrete foundation of our house is cracked and probably cannot be repaired, it is still fine to live in. However, we have been assigned to the red zone, so we will eventually have to move out of our house. The government will make us an offer in August and we have nine months to choose between two different offers. Once we have accepted the offer, we will have a year to find another house.

We have nearly two years to move, but it feels a bit funny, because we felt that the Lord led us to this part of the city, and we had not heard him telling us to move on. So we are seeking wisdom about what we should do.

It is not a bad offer. There are not many place in the world where you can go through a massive earthquake and not lose much of the equity in your house.

I feel sorry feel sorry for the poor taxpayers, who are just being told they must cover the losses of other people without any choice. Thats not right either.

On the other hand. I think the government is borrowing the money from the Chinese. They keen to lend to NZ, now that lending to the US are looking dodgy.

Are there places nearby your home that are not in the Red Zone that you may be able to purchase? I suppose one way of looking at it could be the devil really doesnt want you there and is trying to get you out and unable to follow Gods leading. We shall pray for you that you will be able to hear clearly and that something will open up that will keep you within Gods plans and purposes :-)
